Butlins worse than imagined
We’re at Butlins holiday camp and It’s worse than expected. It’s like stepping back in time. The complex was built in 1962 and it looks like it hasn’t been updated since. Our room is like a really bad hostel.
We took the room and food option which means we get breakfast and dinner. It’s all you can eat stodge in a buffet style. Stuff like lasagna, floppy pasta, curry and chips. It didn’t taste as bad as it looked.
The beer bellied men I mentioned in my last post are all here with their beer bellied wives and beer bellied children. A lot of these people also have brightly coloured hair (reds, greens, yellows etc).
Hi-De-Hi or Lo-De-Lo
Tomorrow we are going to Butlins. This is an English holiday camp like on the TV sitcom Hi-de-Hi. I’m not sure whether to be excited or apprehensive.
I have visions of fat middle aged ladies in bikinis, lounging around the pool, while their kids run and scream unattended all over the place. Then the awful visions of smelly middle aged men sporting giant beer bellies while sitting at the bar drinking pints of Stella.
Guess we will out what it is all about tomorrow, we’ll keep you posted.
London Fix
We decided to head up the London for the afternoon as it is only an hour on the train from Banbury to Marylebone Station. We wandered up Baker Street, then down Oxford Street and this turned out to be a rather expensive route (or a cheap route depending which way you look at it).
We stopped at a Sunglass hut and both bought a new pair of Maui Jim’s each. I’d researched the prices in NZ and we actually ended up getting 2 pairs of sunnies for $200 less than what I would have paid in NZ for 1 pair. So in that way it was a bargain. Mike can replace his superglued pair, and I can replace my pair as the lenses are corroding.
We also found a bike shop and I finally got myself a new cycle jacket. On my past cycle rides my jackets have always leaked, so I spent a bit extra on this jacket as it is GUARANTEED to be waterproof, and highly breathable so you don’t sweat inside the jacket. We’ll see. I also bought a new pair of cycle shorts as mine are starting to disintegrate.
We met Ang, Kirsty and Alison at the Waterloo bar and grill for drinkees, then went into Soho to my favourite Korean barbeque restaurant. The tables have a small barbecue grill in them and we had a selection of marinated seafood, followed by a selection of marinated meats. These are eaten wrapped up in lettuce leaves and rice. Absolutely yummy!
We then raced to the station to catch the train back to Banbury, but arrived late.Thankfully the train was delayed so we ran and jumped on it. Turned out all the trains had been delayed as there had been a fatality on the line. So what should have been a 55 minute train journey turned into a 2 hour journey and we didn’t get back until well after midnight.
We didn’t take too many photos but here are a few. The flag photos are because of the Queens Jubilee (I had to be told that).

Tesco Fix
Today we got our Tesco fix. When we live in England we NEVER venture into Tesco due to large queues and screaming kids. But somehow, after being in NZ for so long we are tempted by the large supermarket with it’s variety of cheap stuff.
Our first stop was a cheap Tesco breakfast. This is something we would NEVER eat when living in England, so not sure why we do it now. It’s a buffet of bacon, eggs, hash browns, baked beans etc that has been sitting on display and it really is quite disgusting but for £1.50 ($3.00) each, it is pretty cheap.
Then just the usual grocery items – beer, beer and more beer. OK, it was on special and we got 3 cases for the price of 2 (sort of).
Banbury
Our first day in Banbury was a wonderful sunny day and warm too. We went for a canal walk with Matt and Sonia to a pub in King Sutton – about 4 miles away (7 kms).
Finally – there’s the pub. Matt and Sonia look thirstier than us.
My first pint.
We caught the train back to Banbury and had wood fired pizza for tea. Matt made the pizza sauce and Sonia made the bases. It’s was really yummy.
Plane’s, Car’s and Corona’s
We’re now in Banbury, just north of Oxford. We had a good flight. We got upgraded to Premium economy in the first leg to Hong Kong but had to go back to economy for the second leg. It was ok though as we didn’t have anyone sitting next to us so we were able to stretch out and sleep for the flight. We watched a funny movie called Rubbish Bosses. It was hilarious and to top it off – had my two favourite actors in it (Kevin Spacey and Jason Bateman).
We had a speedy check-in at Heathrow through the electronic check-in. Our bags were waiting for us at the Carousel (they remove all the priority bags so they were easy to find). Our rental car is a nice VW golf.
We arrived in Banbury about 5pm and Matt and Sonia greeted us with a giant bottle of corona.
I had a bit of an incident with mine
We spent a pleasant evening in the garden, sitting around the fire and the sun didn’t disappear until about 9.30pm. A perfect way to start our holiday.
Auckland Airport
Here we are again, sitting in the Koru lounge at Auckland airport, grazing and drinking beer while waiting for our flight to London. We haven’t had our upgrades confirmed yet which sucks a bit. We haven’t flown economy for ages. In fact I can’t even remember our last economy long haul flight, but I guess that’s the price to pay for giving up work and living the free life.
We’re sitting at the airport
Waiting for our flight
We’re here a bit too early
As we don’t leave ’til tonight
We didn’t get our upgrade
So we’re flying cattle class
All the way to London
We’ll be sitting on our arse.
Worst Western
Day 91 – Cormery to Azay-Le-Rideau
Tuesday August 2, 2011, 38 km (23 miles) – Total so far: 3,354 km (2,084 miles)
We awoke to rain. It’s crazy, we have had a few hot days in a row, then out of the middle of nowhere it rains!
We packed up a wet tent and went into town for some breakfast (we were out of cereal). We grabbed a couple of quiches for now and some pain au raisins for later in the day. As we sat by the river eating our breakfast, a couple of english speaking cyclists (with no luggage) looked a bit lost, so we gave them directions to the cycle route.
We also decided to follow the cycle route rather than the main roads. It was a but further but it was nicer riding. We caught up with the english speaking cyclists we met earlier. “Where are you guys from?” I asked as I overtook one of them with my fully loaded bike (I just had to point that out!). “New Zealand” she replied. “Cool me too”.
They are the first kiwis we have met on the trip. They were doing a weeks ride, but someone else was carrying their luggage and they were staying in hotels. That’s cheating.
There were some houses built into the hills on the route.
It rained on and off all day so we decided a hotel would be the way to go. We noticed there was a Best Western in Azay-Le-Rideau so we decided to navigate to there, and coincidentally, that’s the way the cycle path would take us.
We arrived at the Best Western soaking wet. We asked to view the room, but the lady told us we weren’t allowed to view the room first due to security practices. This seemed odd, as we have never been refused to view a room. She assured us it was a lovely room with a double bed and shower. This triggered alarm bells, but I chose to believe her as the standards of
Best Westerns has been really good in France.
So we checked in and the room was tiny. The bathroom also was tiny. We have stayed in better 1 star hotels. We felt we had been conned into taking the room – but it was wet outside, we were tired, the stupid lady on reception could not speak English – so we left it at that.
The more I thought about it, the more I believe we were conned and I started getting really pissed off about it. So I emailed a note of complaint to Best Western (using the Best Western internet).
Azay-Le-Rideau was really touristy and we couldn’t figure out why. We had been to far nicer towns with far less people. There is a chateaux here but big deal – there are chateaux everywhere.
All the restaurants were really touristy too and I didn’t like the look of any of them. Then Mike noticed a little restaurant tucked away down a side street. It was awesome. We had a really nice meal and it made up for the fact we were ripped off with our accommodation.
*** Update 13/08 ***
I got an email back from Best Western today (13/08) offering us a 50 euro Best Western voucher for use worldwide and it never expires. We were well pleased about that. So that 66 euro crappy hotel only cost us 16 euros.
Cormery
Day 90 – Rosnay to Cormery
Monday August 1, 2011, 88 km (55 miles) – Total so far: 3,316 km (2,060 miles)
It was really hot when we arrived in Loches. We found the tourist office and enquired about the camping but it was going to cost us 37 euros to camp! ‘Thats expensive’, I said to the tourist officer. ‘Oh, but it’s a 4 star camping ground’ she proudly announced. I whispered to Mike ‘In other words, no toilet seats OR toilet paper’.
Even though we were hot and bothered, we picked up some dinner supplies and decided to continue on a further 22km to the next campsite (hence the high kms).
We found a small municipal campground in Cormery, just south of Tours. It was quiet and we had another nice nights rest.
